Writing offers an immediacy with depth that is hard to match. I love writing because I live a thousand lives, and experience the world through different eyes and perspectives. Writing nurtures my curiosity and need for meaning.

Writing is fun, easy, intuitive and natural. It’s logical, but also fluid and adaptable.

My curiosity has led me to learn other languages, that I enjoy speaking, writing and communicating in. But I find that English has a unique place in the world, perhaps due to its spread under Queen Elizabeth I, where English became the de facto language in far flung destinations across the globe, assimilating and immersing itself in different cultures. The English language is truly magnificent.

Its form though hearkens back to its early origins, blending Latin (like French, Spanish, Italian and Portuguese) with Germanic language and Anglo Saxon influence. English has elements of Gaelic and Welsh, bringing poetic qualities and nuances along with rich history, folklore and legends. English is also deeply influenced by Scottish and Irish influences as well.

Fast forward to today, English is also the first language of the Internet, computers and the web. It is a language that adapts to changing eras and interests. Hence it stays fresh and relevant, while its vocabulary grows deeper and richer.

Also, as a good German friend pointed out to me, English has a lightness and humor lacking in other languages. I agree wholeheartedly on this. Sarcasm might be an English invention, just ask Monty Python. :) 

I also find deep pleasure in exploring subtleties in the English language and how things can be said at times, the tone of voice and meaning conveyed. My mother's love of language and her expert use in response to situations at times, always amazes me. She is kind in how she communicates, and I think that is truly individual. So many people I have met, fascinate me by their preferences for certain words and expressions, and forceful use of language to convey something they are passionate about. I am forever intrigued by the range, depth and subtlety of the English language.

What thrills me today as well is the opportunity to connect with so many people across the globe through this singular, dynamic language! Writing connects you with the entire world. It’s such a gift really! And a joy! Today it is easier than ever. Aren’t we lucky? :)
