Birthday Cake

Today I remembered an experience I had as a kid and thought I would share this with you. A little bit of humor, what do you think?

It was my mom's birthday and a beautiful summer day. My babysitter had been hard at work baking, icing and crafting this beautiful vanilla cake with lovely little flowers in red and yellow - my mom's two favorite colors.

I still remember how beautiful the cake looked. It suited my mom too. She was pretty breathtaking those days - just being herself! Ha ha. Yeah, maybe I am a bit partial, but from the looks on strangers' faces, I think it was unanimous - my mom's just a natural beauty doing absolutely anything! :)

So back to my story...Well, my babysitter had been telling me all day, "Don't tell your mom we have a cake. It's a secret." She had said it so many times that I felt it was drilled in my brain and I even repeated it aloud (I remember doing this).

When my mom got home, I rushed to see her. She hugged me and I burst out, "We don't have a cake for you." She smiled big just as I saw my babysitter's jaw drop open.

Then I continued, "It is not a vanilla cake either." Vanilla is my mom's favorite. My mom started laughing and then continued on into the kitchen.

At this point, my babysitter was like, well, might as well show it! Ha ha. She pulled out the cake and set it on the dining room table. She added candles and lit them. The cake was a beauty! I still remember that part very vividly and also that my mom was wearing a soft white blouse with delicate capped sleeves and beautiful red earrings. It was picture perfect really! Then she leaned in, and blew out the candles. Hooray!

Well, since then, my older brother has said, "We can't tell you a secret, unless we want the whole world to know." Ha ha! That might be true.
