To me being a writer is being compassionate. You're conveying ideas and sharing experiences in a way that can be understood and appreciated. There's the 'back story' and there's the purpose and meaning you hope to convey.

I like to think it's the same with acting, although I come from a point of view of a director. Ideally the actors show that on their faces and in their movements. They compel you to care. You become invested in them and what's happening to them and what's driving them forward.

When I was a kid, I was really fascinated with wrinkles on old people's faces. I loved to touch them if they let me, which they always did. I liked the character and experiences I could see so visibly on their faces.

When you look at a painting of people, you can see that too sometimes. I always loved and still love when you can see that, whether it is a still painting or a painting depicting someone in action. Clothing and fabric in paintings fascinate me - just the depth and life-like quality. I love the care the painter put into doing that right.
